Week 9 - New York

๐ŸŒ Round the world update week 9

This week weโ€™ve continued our journey across the United States (No sign of Donald Trump ๐ŸŠ, but thereโ€™s still time). We left Aspen, and the state of Colorado and into Nebraska, the 16th largest state by area. We had a stop in Chicago ๐Ÿ’จ, which was the start of another world travelling adventure route followed by Michael Palin, that of Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was an American journalist and writer, born in 1899, and awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. (๐Ÿ“บ Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure, Episode 2: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00xb6z3 - this is really good!).

๐ŸŒƒ Chicago sits on the southernmost point of Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Lake Michigan is 494km long and 190km wide - I think you could fit about 106,000 Dorney lakes inside it (!) - although I bet the crosswind at Dorney is probably worse ๐Ÿ‘€ than anything Michigan could throw up. I found a few rowing clubs on Lake Michigan โ€“ Lake Leelanau Rowing Club rows at the north of the lake, and Junior annual memberships are just under $2000! ๐Ÿ’ฐ Makes us look pretty good value ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿšง From Chicago we follow the Interstate 90, the longest Interstate Highway at 3020.54miles towards New York. The I-90 runs across the whole USA from Seattle to Boston. At 15kph, it would take us 322 hours to row that far, but in the car itโ€™s apparently about 50 hours of driving.

๐ŸŽ Weโ€™re finishing our journey this week very close to New York City. Itโ€™s the last piece of land Palin saw on his journey until returning to Europe at the end of his 80 days. New York is the most densely populated city in the US with over 8 million people living in 302 square miles, which is 28,500 people per square mile. In comparison, Reading has 10,460 people per square mile!

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ If the state of Texas was as densely populated as New York, the whole worldโ€™s population could fit in there! A little known fact, New York City was once the capital city of the USA, between 1789 and 1790.

๐Ÿ“† We have 19 days left to do the remaining kilometres, and we are 10 days ahead of Palin at the moment. Weโ€™re running the risk of arriving early, and missing out on the final week of updates. As I know you love them so much, we might take a little detour and do some sight seeing!

๐Ÿ’œ Great job team!
