Week 7 - Midway Atoll

🌎 Round the World update WEEK 7

We left Tokyo a couple of weeks ago and as it’s 8813km from Tokyo to Los Angeles it’s going to take us 588 hours to get across the ocean. We are averaging 252 hours a week so we should hit the USA part way through next week🤞🏼At the moment we are still floating in the Pacific 🌊

⏰ Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles so we’re actually travelling back in time 🧐 as we make our way there 🤨. Seriously though, we do cross the International Date line, and lose a day - this imaginary line limits time zone confusion for those travelling (although thinking about it makes my head hurt 🤯). Tokyo is therefore 1 whole day ahead of Los Angeles. I think that’s right, Maybe a Geographer can explain this better 👀?

It’s 6700km since we left Tokyo and that means we had a little stop off recently right on a cluster of little Hawaiian Islands 🌺 🌴 (actually US territory) known as the Midway Atoll, home to the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Reserve. The MANWR is almost exactly halfway between North America and Asia, hence the name.

With VE Day just passed, there’s an interesting piece of history surrounding the Islands. Until 1993, the atoll was the home of the Naval Air Facility Midway Island. The Battle of Midway, which was fought from June 4 until June 6, 1942, was a critical Allied victory of the Pacific Campaign of World War 2. The US Navy successfully defended the atoll from a Japanese invasion, defeating a Japanese battle group, marking a turning point in the war.

🦅 Nowadays, the nature reserve is home to hundreds of species of animals, with birds nesting all over the islands (you can see some on the street view link later).

🚣‍♀️ Fantastic job with all the training, Zoom, Instagram live sessions and generally being a super supportive team. I love reading all your posts, and seeing your uploads. Lockdown would be much lonelier without RUBC.
